Requesting a DD214

Requesting A DD214

Need a copy of your recorded DD214?

Military discharge records (DD214) can be obtained from the county Recorder’s office where recorded. A veteran can request a copy online at the State’s website or come into the Recorder’s Office to request a copy. If you are unsure if the DD214 has been recorded you can call our office and our staff can assist you with looking up the document. The information needed for a request is the veteran’s name, date of birth (if known), and branch of service.

Who can obtain a copy of a DD214?

The veteran of record, County Veteran Service office (CVSO), IDVA Staff, legal guardian, licensed attorney, funeral director, representative of the estate, next of kin of the veteran, or the Allen County Recorder’s office staff can request on behalf of the veteran in office.

State requirements dictate what identification/supporting documentation is required for each applicant type requesting the copy. Since the documents have social security numbers on them, it is important to ensure that there is care & discretion in the process. Requesting the records through the Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs, confirms who is requesting these records.

Please note that the Recorder’s office may look up a record to see if it is on file but DOES NOT furnish records over the phone/email/fax. If we are unable to find a record on file, the applicant will be directed to the Allen County Veterans Service Office in Room 106 of the Rousseau Center. 260-449-7861
